What are Cluster Flies?
Cluster Flies are propably one of the most annoying and persistent problems we face as Pest Control Specialists.
Whilst Cluster Flies do not harbour diseases or pose a health risk, their presence is quite distressing to the home owner. The main nuisance they cause is the annoying buzzing at the windows, both day and night and the mess of constantly cleaning up dead flies and fly spots all the time – usually hundreds of cluster flies at a time.
Cluster Fly lifecycle is a bit odd, they actually live outside and lay eggs in the ground. When the Cluster Fly larvae hatch, they prey on earthworms on which they feed. As the temperature gets colder, they look for places to hibernate over winter.
Loft spaces are ideal for hibernation as they are warm, dark and sheltered from predators. As temperatures rise, the Cluster Flies emerge from hibernation and head for the light – this is when they get into the house. Most Cluster Flies enter through light fittings, cracks in ceilings or where beams join the ceiling etc.
You may also see Cluster Flies appear over the winter months, which is due to modern centrally heated houses. The warmth coming through the ceiling into the loft, tricks them in to believing that spring has arrived. This can be particularly frustrating for home owners as the number of emerging Cluster Flies can seem endless.
Unfortunately, once your house becomes a harbour for hibernation, you will always have the problem as it is almost impossible to get rid of them.

Treatment of Cluster Flies
There are several treatments that can be used. They are dependent on several factors relating to the property and they may be used individually or as an ongoing strategy.
Smoke Generators for Cluster Fly treatment can be highly effective, but they only kill the cluster flies which have emerged. Treatments using smoke generators almost always need repeating a week or so later. The insecticide contained in the smoke is very fast acting and the Cluster Flies are dead within minutes of inhalation or contact from the smoke.
Dust based insecticides can be used to treat the cracks and crevices the cluster flies emerge from. This dust is very fine and acts as a contact powder. Once the Cluster Fly comes into contact with the powder, it cleans its self and ingests the poison. Again this is very quick acting and requires the smallest of contact to be effective. The dust can be injected under tiles along the outside of the house under pressure to provide a blanket of power between the tiles and felt to attack flies coming into the property.
Liquid based insecticides can also be used to coat surfaces and treat cracks and crevices within the loft area. This oil based fluid remains active for several months and is highly effective on those cluster flies that have not yet emerged from hibernation. As the cluster flies crawl out of their hibernation area, they come into contact with the chemical.
Ultra Violet fly traps can also be deployed in loft spaces. These can be glue board or electocutor types. Once fitted, they remain on all the time and attract any flies that emerge or return to hibernate. They must be regularly serviced and emptied as many thousands of flies can be in a loft space.
Cluster fly traps which catch cluster flies as they go to windows can also save cleaning every day. These can be sticky traps or even traps that contain special “quick sand” material which capture and hold any cluster fly.
